Animal Kingdom Keychains
Isn’t it funny how the one item I carry with me every single day is a 15-year-old metal ring? It’s cluttered with peeling plastic cards from stores that have long since closed, along with keys to places I’ll probably never visit again. And how did I end up in such a creative slump? What I really needed was:
- A little boost to break out of my making rut—kind of like writing “get out of bed” on my to-do list just to feel accomplished when I cross it off.
- A fresh new keychain.
Pretty straightforward, right?
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- Plastic Animals: Check the party supply section; I found a bag for just $2.00. In this case, cheaper is better since lighter plastic is easier to work with.
- Eyelet Screws
- Key Rings
- Spray Paint
- Sealant: This is optional, but it’s a smart idea to protect your keychain from daily wear and tear.
- Extras: You can also include charms, beads, or tassels. I have a collection of these from broken jewelry, gifts, and other random items—basically, I’m a mini-hoarder of things that might come in handy someday!
Steps to Create Your Keychains
- Attach Eyelet Screws: Start by screwing the eyelet screws into the back of your plastic animals. It might sound a bit rough, so maybe don’t do this part when someone else is around. Depending on the shape of the animal, you may need to angle the screw slightly.
- Spray Paint: Take your animals outside and give them a nice coat of gold spray paint while placing them on newspaper or poster board. Once they dry (which takes about 10 minutes), flip them over and ensure they’re fully covered.
- Seal for Durability: After the paint is dry, apply a coat of sealant to make them extra durable.
- Assemble Your Keychains: Slide your newly painted animals onto your key rings and add any additional charms, initials, or beads you want.
This DIY project is an easy way to inject some fun and stylish flair into your keys!
